Cannot download HARDENED Tor Browser using Tor Browser Updater (Whonix)

Edit: On to something here. . .

ERROR: Failed to download: https://dist.torproject.org/torbrowser/5.5a4-hardened/tor-browser-linux64-5.5a4-hardened_en-US.tar.xz Possible reasons:
- The download server is down.
- File size exceeded (endless data attack triggered).
- Tor Browser Downloader (by Whonix developers) has been broken due to upstream changes.
Recommendations:

- Try again later. If the error persists it probably won't solve itself before the next update.
- Check News: https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Download#Stay_tuned
- Manually update: https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Manually_Updating_Tor_Browser

Edit by Patrick:
changed title

Hm. How awful. They changed the download link scheme again. There is no way to foresee such issues. (Unless programming some intelligence that guesses this.)

There is a workaround. You can set tb-updater’s TB_LANG variable to ALL. (case sensitive, make sure to write ALL with all upper case.) This is one method to do this:

update-torbrowser --language ALL

There are also other ways set tb-updater’s TB_LANG variable (permanently) (by config file, etc.):
[s]Change the System or Tor Browser Language

But when doing so, you will no longer be able to download the normal versions. Before being able to do that, you need to undo that setting.

(Not Whonix specific. Moving to Whonix support forum.)

Btw…

Tor Browser 5.5a4-hardened is released
https://blog.torproject.org/blog/tor-browser-55a4-hardened-released

Yeah, after I looked at the the download links, I realized what was going on.

I just manually downloaded the hardened version, checked the signature and merged it with both browser (~/tor-browser and ~/.tb/tor-browser) directories. Bookmarks and addons survived, as well as all browser settings.

So I’m content for now.

It looks as though they simply don’y have individual locales for the hardened browser (yet?), so my en_US downloader didn’t have anything to grab. No idea if this will be changing.

Anyway, thanks for all the hard work. I’ll keep testing things out and seeing what else I can break.

Thanks!

https://blog.torproject.org/blog/tor-browser-55a4-hardened-released says on that… Probably not…

there will only be one bundle shipped supporting all the languages found in alpha builds. Tor Launcher should help selecting the desired locale during the first start taking the operating system locale into account.
Tor Launcher is disabled in Whonix. (For other reasons: https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Tor_Browser#Whonix_Proxy_Settings) So language switching using Tor Launcher will not work. Should still be possible through Tor Browser (Firefox)'s usual settings.

Download will work with the updated tb-updater from the testers repository. (Or wait until its blessed stable.)

Running is another story, though.

Works in Qubes-Whonix.

Non-Whonix-Whonix not tested yet.

For now this is for Linux 64bit systems only

So on Non-Whonix-Whonix it may not work. Trying with linux-image-amd64 might work.

Download will work with the updated tb-updater from the testers repository.
Still not working after the last update (tb_updater included).

Non-Qubes-Whonix:

 • Not easy…
 • Install and boot kernel linux-image-amd64. Or set environment variable ‘export ARCH_DOWNLOAD=linux64’. Or not. Even if installed by tb-updater or manually. It’s a dead end. Won’t work in Non-Qubes-Whonix. At least not with the Default/Download version. Because the architecture is 32 bit.
 • Experiment with multiarch. Try installing 64 bit packages also. Looks like an inefficient solution.
 • Build Non-Qubes-Whonix 64 bit from source code.

For now this is for Linux 64bit systems only but we are thinking about supporting OS X and Windows in the future as well.
Doesn't look like Linux 32 bit hardened TBB downloads will be provided anytime soon.

EDIT:
It’s also very unlikely, that I will be producing downloadable 64 bit versions of Non-Qubes-Whonix. Too much maintenance effort. I try balance it by providing 32 bit Non-Qubes-Whonix for most/lower end systemd and providing 64 bit Qubes-Whonix for higher end systems.

Non-Qubes-Whonix 14 will be 64 bit.

Qubes-Whonix:

 • Works out of the box. Because it’s 64 bit.

Hardened Tor Browser Bundle not as hardened you think. Soon becoming extinct:
