Translations Technical Developer Discussion

Can’t reproduce it anymore.

But now I could reproduce the old issue you reported here:

Could you please check and eventual fill a bug report with upstream?

I tried to reproduce the bug on the Translatetest, the only one not working is again A>Dev/Build</> Documentation

You can check it here: https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Translatetest/avk
and compare it with: https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Translatetest

I could report a bug for it, but I think it’s sufficient just to avoid this particular syntax, as nothing could be done about this.

If Documentation sends to to Build and Update Whonix ™ from Source Code, ‘Documentation’ is in untranslatable and nothing will change it.

We can write [Dev/Build_Documentation | Documentation] instead.

If it’s just build doc and not lots of other links or If it’s just " " vs “" and "” solves it, then by all means, really minor, no bug report necessary and go with your solution.

Note: I tried to hide

* Very brief introduction and summary on Whonix Homepage

in Documentation by:

 • A>Main Page|</> Very brief introduction and summary on Whonix Homepage

but unfortunately this or any variation of it will break. So will be visible.

I will add warnings about this in documentation notes.

The tag for every link is a bug anyhow.
Compare Whonix ™ Documentation with Design - Whonix.

We could and should wrap the whole list into . Not individual links.

Fixed it.

So far so good? So far all sorted out?

On Login required - Whonix you can see that an immense number of spam bots registers every day. I plan to improve spam protection and want to wipe all accounts without any edits. The latter is not that important and has time.

Are there any account names of translators that have not made any edits yet that I should not delete?

So far so good. Currently on Advanced Security Guide, as you can see in TranslateTest.

Please do not delete Piotr Gierach and Taras Baran, from what I know they are still up for translating.

Just a minor FYI:
For a very few selected pages in my personal eventually false feeling, a word by word translation is ineffective and a total rewrite works better. (I am making that argument here: Whonix Forum)

So I was wondering what would happen if I created a German rewrite of Donating to Whonix ™, i.e. https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Donate/de and later someone used the translate extension to create a translation. Then the https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Donate/de would be overwritten without asking. Fortunately, mediawiki would be smart enough to at least keep a backup (https://www.whonix.org/w/index.php?title=Translatetest2)./de&oldid=12920)

Could you try to find out please if the language bar (), the language selector supports country flags? Would look more more pretty and advertise the various translations much better?

Here is response I got from contacting service in that matter:

There is no such built-in feature. However you should be able to adapt the CSS to include additional images such as flags, sure. On most wikis we know, it would be a terrible idea because the language bar is already so stuffed.

and

In addition, in most cases it is not appropriate to use country flags to represent languages. There exists thousands of languages and less than 200 countries, for example.

Also, how would you like to implement total rewrites? One possible solution is to stuff more text in same translation units, but then of course it would be impossible to hide all MediaWiki markup, we originally wanted to hide and again, translating big units is quite inconvenient.

Okay. Thanks. I’ve also read elsewhere that flags <-> languages doesn’t actually help usability.

Dunno. There are very few total rewrites at the moment. Just whonix.dehttps://www.whonix.org/wiki/Deutsch/Homepage. That’s best we could think of in Whonix Forum. Unless someone has a better suggestion.

It’s probably best not to use the translate extension for total rewrites.

Done:
https://phabricator.whonix.org/T19

All preserved.

Figured out how to leave translators untouched. The list of accounts with the translation flag can be found here:

Now that we got a translation coordinator… When we need actual translators, we could ask in sourceforge help wanted forum:
https://sourceforge.net/p/forge/helpwanted/translation/

Chances are little, but nevertheless, found quite some contributors in sourceforge help wanted forum.

Just saw Tor Controller: Difference between revisions - Whonix. Looks good.

I think links such as (the original)

Stream Isolation

or

whonixcheck

and so forth are problematic.

Translators tend to translate their inner content between …. Could you please change these links? I.e.
Stream Isolation + tvar magic?

I wrote

<tvar|A>whonixcheck</>

there, so the whole link will be cut out (since whonixcheck shouldn’t be translated either way). It will appear as ‘Check out this link: $A’

Left one Stream Isolation by accident, but fixed it now.

There is an issue with some [edit] links.

Example:
https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Starting_Whonix#PAE_crash

When I press [edit] it opens the wrong section.

Same here:

Could you look into it please?

On Whonix ™ Documentation under “First steps with Whonix” all links broke. They all link to Install Additional Software Safely. Non-obvious mistake. Dunno what’s wrong.

Tried to find something about [edit] in Language Extension Bundle documentation but found nothing. It seems it’s not dependent on translation markup and it’s completely different subject.

I asked Service and waiting for response.

As it comes to broken links code looks like this:

* Security Advice after Installing Whonix * Starting Whonix * Startup Options * Tor Bridge Mode, using (private) (obfuscated) bridges * Stay tuned * Change the system language * Change the keyboard layout * KDE/Whonix Desktop Tips * Higher Screen Resolution without installing VirtualBox guest additions * Security Guide * Install additional software

Which is typical and all the same syntax I use everywhere. Cause must me more mysterious than this.

Okay, I fixed the [edit] links problem.

It turns out 1 level headings should never be used, so I switched all

Lorem Ipsum
to

Lorem Ipsum
Test it for yourself:
