Translations Technical Developer Discussion

Yes, Issue 1 was resolved. It saves now.

Issue 2 was not, but since I know about tvar syntax now, it’s irrelevant. I will learn it and make new markup.

I changed markup on Starting Page, it works like this:

With: Read the [[#Boot Options|Boot Options]] chapter and use the 486 kernel.
Without: Read the [[$A Boot Options]] chapter and use the 486 kernel.

With: If you still need help, please go to the [Whonix Forum Whonix User Help Forum].
Without: If you still need help, please go to the [$A Whonix User Help Forum].

and this is the best we can do at the moment.

Edit: In case of it’s only possible to have ‘Whonix$A’ instead of ‘Whonix(URL)’. It will break or leap to the next word otherwise.

Edit2: Some links won’t cooperate, for example first breaks down, while second works fine.

Good find! Better than not using tvar.

Seems they are aware of the “translators tend to mess up wiki markup” issue already?

They are aware surely, but what’s funny is that their own pages don’t hide markup in translations and some parts of the documentation is ‘in construction’.

It needs some heavy bug-fixing/upgrades or at least making it more user friendly.

Problems we have, seem to be a common ones, for example look at this page: https://www.boywiki.org/en/Links

I just saw:
https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Main_Page/en-gb

Probably a translation to British English doesn’t make sense. Or am I missing something?

Also there are “two types of German” in the translate extension. The normal one “Deutsch” and “Deutsch (Sie Form)”. But the latter one also doesn’t make sense. We probably should use use “Deutsch” and somehow deactivate someone accidentally translations to “Deutsch (Sie Form)”. No one in German cares about this at that magnitude. Not even any native German websites have both translations.

Is it possible to deactivate the possibly to translate to any obsolete hypothetical languages?

No, of course British English is redundant.

Couldn’t find anything in documentation, so I asked in Extension Talks, waiting for answers now.

Okay, so in page translation there is Priority Languages field when we could list allowed languages and disable anything else. This would disable languages we don’t want be at the same time when adding new languages we would have to update the priority language list.

When it comes to deleting existing translations, administrator would have to delete forked page itself, e.g. …/MainPage/en-gb

Also:
Some syntax won’t work with tvar so in order to use it in such link

[[<tvar|A>Dev/Build</> Documentation]]

I will have to rewrite it like this:

[<tvar|A>Build and Update Whonix ™ from Source Code Dev/Build</> Documentation]

Are you okay with this?

Okay, how do we do this? Needs some changes in LocalSettings.php or?

Deleted.

So we couldn’t use [[internallink|description]] anymore?

Dunno… Good question…

What do you think?

Any other opinions?

Can you make an example please? Do it with Start Whonix ?

External link style

behaves differently than internal link style

External links are opened in new tabs. Internal links replace the existing tab. Also look differently. External ones have a lock symbol if they go to https.

No, this field shows up when page/version of the page is being marked for translation. You can see it here: (link will expire if someone marks the page)

https://www.whonix.org/w/index.php?title=Special:PageTranslation&target=Main+Page

No, it concerns only some links (or pages).
When you look up links in Main Page, for example [[<tvar|A>About|</> About]] it works fine, but [[<tvar|A>Dev/Build</> Documentation]] which you can find on Develop page won’t.
I discovered this when trying to translate it to Polish (you can see that link is broken).
In Zzztranslatetest is modifed, working version of this link - [<tvar|A>Build and Update Whonix from Source Code Dev/Build</> Documentation]

Now here comes the best part. Those two links seem to be the same type, first is from Main Page, second from Develop. First works, second breaks (you can lookup the second in Zzztranslatetest copy of Develop)

[<tvar|A>News - Whonix Forum</> Blog]
[<tvar|A>https://github.com/Whonix/Whonix/issues</> Development Tickets, Bugs, Feature Requests, Roadmap]

The cause of this is beyond my understanding, because everything works in Main Page. Any ideas?

but [[Dev/Build Documentation]] which you can find on Develop page won't.
There is no such page "Dev/Build" or in other words there is no such page as https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Dev/Build

The link is Build and Update Whonix from Source Code. So rather than Dev/Build it should use Dev/Build_Documentation.

In doubt could you make on Zzztranslatetest two links next to each other? One that works and one that doesn’t work?

Got another strange issue. Edited Zzztranslatetest. Made a new chapter.

https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Zzztranslatetest#ptest

Marked page for translation. But when I want to translate to “Deutsch”, it does not show that section. Any idea what I did wrong?

You didn’t accept pending changes.

You can see example of those links at:
https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Zzztranslatetest/ruq

Compare it with markup. I made a pic so it’s more clear, from left markup, translation and rendering.

Now accepted them. And now I am totally confused. When I want to translate to “Deutsch” now, it asks me to translate a much older version.

This is another thing, I think Zzztranslatetest is broken.
I had the same thing, everytime I wanted to add something new, I needed to add new language. This is why there are so many.
Luckily it only occurs on this page. Maybe Fortasse could do something about, he created the page.

If it’s just a heisenbug for the very page, then we’re lucky. I’d say let’s just wipe that page and try with a new test page?

Sure thing, go ahead.

Created:
https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Translatetest

The translations menu looks still messed up. Asking me to translate things that changed in a later version? Is this the bug again or am I doing something wrong?

Can you give an example? I can’t find it, every language seems to give me the same thing to translate.

Edit: Develop is done. Moving along.
