Whonix for VirtualBox - Sysmaint - Where to run upgrades? Only on Whonix-Workstation or also on Whonix-Gateway?

Patrick I do have a question that I think only you can answer, you should probably add the answer to this here, there’s a questions and answers segment sysmaint - System Maintenance User

Ok so when you go into Persistent Mode Sysmaint Session, on the System Maintenance Panel, when you select check for updates and then install updates, is just updating workstation only, or is it updating both workstation and gateway?

If using VirtualBox: Typically,

  • What happens inside 1 VM, stays inside 1 VM.
  • Any action taken in 1 VM does not affect another VM’s filesystem.

So in conclusion, in case of Whonix, both Whonix-Workstation and Whonix-Gateway must be updated individually. Both VMs should be updated.

At time of writing - and this will take a very long time to change - There is no central “1 click = upgrade everything at once” feature.
