So how exactly do you create a shared folder on Whonix?

So for starters I’m using Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. I’m using virtualbox 7.0.16

Ok so if I google “how to make a shared folder in whonix” this shows up at the very top [Tutorial] Installing a shared folder in your host OS and in your virtual OS but that’s not how I made a shared folder at all.

So here’s how I made a shared folder on Whonix. Ok, first off, on your operating system that hosts virtualbox, you know the host, go and make a folder (put this folder wherever you want) and give this folder a name something like “Whonix shared folder”. Ok moving on to the next step.

Ok so when you first come into Whonix workstation, go down to the bottom right corner of the screen and you see those icons? Hover over them and they’ll tell you what they are, find the one that says “shared folders” and then right click on it and go into “shared folders settings”. Click on “machine folders” and you see the folder with a green plus sign, when you hover over it it’ll say “adds new shared folder”, click on it. Ok now in “folder path” go and select the “Whonix shared folder” that you created on your host OS.

Now check “auto-mount” and check “make permanent” and then hit ok. Now go into file manager and it should be there under “Devices”. I guess if it isn’t showing up at first then restart Whonix but it should show up.

So this is how I made a shared folder on Whonix.

One thing I’d like to add, so it doesn’t look like you can make a second shared folder, well it’ll let you make a second shared folder but it’s nowhere to be found under “Devices” so yeah, you can make a second shared folder but it won’t mount. So Whonix will only let you have one shared folder is that right? Cause I tried to make a second shared folder and it didn’t work, I can only see the first shared folder that I originally created.

And listen, I only came over to Linux just a few years ago, I’ve used Windows all my life. I really do prefer to do things using a graphical user interface GUI. And I need detailed step by step instructions otherwise I’ll get confused and I’ll wanna pull my hair out in frustration. Why am I bringing this up? Well look at this [Tutorial] Installing a shared folder in your host OS and in your virtual OS these instructions are not easy to follow if you’re a newbie, it’s not user friendly.

So yeah what is the right way to make a shared folder on whonix? What’s the easiest way to do it? I really do prefer things to be easy and I definitely prefer a GUI. If it isn’t easy then I’ll get confused and wanna pull my hair out. For us newbies please, it needs to be easy and user friendly.

So the way I just explained, is that correct? I’m here to hear from the experts on this.

[Tutorial] Installing a shared folder in your host OS and in your virtual OS is for KVM. You seem to be using VirtualBox. Hence, my above link already has the documentation.

Yeah but if you google “how to make a shared folder in whonix” that’s the link that shows up at the very top of the search results and really, nothing else good shows up. This link VirtualBox Guest Additions and Shared Folders didn’t show up in the search results, or at least I didn’t see it.

But hey no worries, hopefully this thread will show up in the search results if a newbie is googling trying to figure out how to make a shared folder on Whonix.

I read other writeups for shared folders on Whonix which made it more confusing, but yours was the easiest to follow. Thank you.
