Would stable Tor Browser deb package help or burden whonix devs?

Exploring Tor Browser 13.5 release info noticed 2024-06-05T00:00:00Z closed issue
Make deb and rpm packages for Tor Browser (#41126)

richard’s note_3019458 (direct link) suggests Q3 2024 target at earliest, for stable 14.0 Tor Browser stable deb package.

update-torbrowser has long worked very well for this user but wonder

  • Would stable Tor Browser deb package help or burden whonix or kicksecure dev

  • Have I missed something obvious?

Much appreciate whonix, kicksecure, and all the great documentation! :hugs:

There is also Tor Browser Launcher which is under the banner of the Tor Project but based on what I believe the Whonix project wants - some functionality is missing. Hence update-torbrowser. And if/when Tor Browser gets official packages that might supersede it anyway?

Assuming it is implemented correctly I see it as a net benefit to Whonix. Others can certainly chime in.

I am waiting for this since ~ 12 years.

Download Debian package from torproject.org, digital software verification, upload to Kicksecure / Whonix APT repository would actually be more maintenance burden than tb-updater.

Less maintenance burden: Tor Browser deb from deb.torproject.org APT repository. This might happen as per:

So that is great news!

Even less maintenance burden: Tor Browser deb from packages.debian.org APT repository.

Commented on Sign and deploy apt package repository for Tor/Mullvad Browser (#41117) · Issues · The Tor Project / Applications / tor-browser-build · GitLab just now.

From this ticket, I would assume that deb.torproject.org now already contains Tor Browser. Looking at: https://deb.torproject.org/torproject.org/dists/bookworm/main/binary-amd64/Packages

Not there yet.

Was this ticket accidentally closed or is there another ticket to follow the progress along when Tor Browser from deb.torproject.org will become available?

Thank you for feeback h3xagonal. Key seems “assuming it is implemented correctly”.

Understand.

Appealing end goal it seems.

@Patrick thank you for effort to ‘reopen’ Enable build of rpm and deb packages in Tor Browser releases, now, issue #41179!

Maybe we see tp repo version in this or next year…

Off-topic comment: Hope Tor Browser deb from packages.debian.org APT repository happens, before a stable and secure mixminion appears  Think I am waiting ~17 years for that.

Best regards!
