wiki: Dev/Design-Gateway - questions.

Network Configuration

“DNS and other traffic from the Workstation gets forced by the firewall to use the anonymity network.”

``- which firewall, workstation’s or gateway’s?

“Shared page in chapter “about package manager”.”

``- can’t find the referenced chapter by that name. Could ‘package manager’ above be made into a link, please?

Firewall

“Add a firewall, which only allows traffic the anonymizer to connect to the internet.”

``- Huh? “Which denies internet access to any Workstation traffic not going through the anonymizer.”? | “Which only permits traffic going through the anonymizer to reach the internet.”?

"

``- links broken. (And I don’t know git well enough to find/fix them.)

``- True for all other github links as well.

Help file

“User can type “whonix”.”

``- Perhaps a desktop icon (‘Quick Whonix Help’) running this would be useful. I had not tracked the presence of this command, and (D’OH!) seeing it now … I very much wish I had.

The gateway’s.

“Shared page in chapter “about package manager”.”

Add a firewall, which only permits traffic of the anonymizer to reach
the internet.

Please clone whole Whonix. As per some recent enough build documentation
instructions. At time of writing:
https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Dev/Build_Documentation/11_full#Get_the_Source_Code

find . | grep whonix_firewall

./packages/whonix-gw-firewall indicates
https://github.com/Whonix/whonix-gw-firewall. From there you can click
on github on usr, then on bin, then on whonix_firewall to get the full link.

https://github.com/Whonix/whonix-gw-firewall/blob/master/usr/bin/whonix_firewall

https://github.com/Whonix/whonix-gw-firewall/blob/master/etc/whonix_firewall.d

``- True for all other github links as well.

Help file

I won’t get to rework this anytime soon.

“User can type “whonix”.”

``- Perhaps a desktop icon (‘Quick Whonix Help’) running this would be useful. I had not tracked the presence of this command, and (D’OH!) seeing it now … I very much wish I had.

There is a Whonix documentation link already in the start menu [and on
the desktop for Non-Qubes-Whonix] that links to
Whonix Documentation.

Typing “whonix” is not that useful at the moment anyhow. And more for
the geeks. Too confusing to making it more accessible.

Actually, I found it fantastically useful. From not knowing what’s going on / where to look, it gave me an explicit search term to get somewhere useful - when I otherwise had no clue as to where to go next.

And more for the geeks.

Perhaps so … but they’re the one’s poking at Gateway.

and on the desktop for Non-Qubes-Whonix] that links to Whonix Documentation.

Not on Gateway. Do see it, now, on Workstation.

Please take my original point - such a ‘Quick Help’ link on the gateway desktop would be useful.

I doubt I even looked at the start menu. I certainly would not have looked in favorites or internet submenu - on a new system one is only looking in utilities, system, or settings.

I DID however, notice the desktop icons - understanding such to be points of interest the developers expected to be most useful / helpful / important.

Even if one doesn’t at that point understand any of it, they’re going to click it to see what happens.

And a ‘Quick Whonix Help’ resulting in a konsole window with the results of ‘whonix | less’ would likely reduce the scope and extent of the blundering about when first poking about trying to comprehend what the beastie is.

I don’t think I’m following you. Are you saying ‘about package manager’ should link to What is the Browser window size that sites see when you browse? (possible fingerprinting) ?

Hah! I see now, thank you. It isn’t obvious that things like usr are directories / links / folders. er, of course they are, at a bash prompt, just not obvious on a github page.

That’s fine / why I asked. Easy for me to change, letting others focus more on what they know / can do that I cannot (yet). Let’s me contribute back to the extent that I can, when I can, to the ability / knowledge had at that point in time.

Happy to do/help when I’m confident the help is accurate. When I’m not convinced I’m perceiving accurately I ask a question instead of editing directly.

[Edit: Turned out browser was blocking icons - I now see file/folder icons. D’OH!]

Might have pasted the wrong link.

It should link to:

Thank you for helping out on this!

Little help here, please … browsing the wiki and git pages and trying to correlate broken links to correct destinations … I’m drowning / going in circles / baffled.

I (now) get (thanks to your pointer), that (Whonix · GitHub) /Whonix/blob/master/whonix_gateway → /whonix-gw-firewall

But I’m baffled at:

  • /Whonix/blob/master/Whonix-Gateway_packages
  • /Whonix/blob/master/whonix_gateway
  • /Whonix/blob/master/whonix_shared
  • /Whonix/blob/master/build-steps.d

If you can tell me how/where to correlate / cross-reference things, or cut/paste and append ‘-> /whonix-gw-firewall’ equivalents to each line, I can do the rest of the digging and wiki updating.

I wish Whonix · GitHub would just give me a folder list as https://github.com/Whonix/Whonix does, but …

anon-meta-packages/debian/control at master · Whonix/anon-meta-packages · GitHub

https://github.com/Whonix/Whonix/tree/master/build-steps.d

These folders don’t exist anymore, because Whonix has been split into packages. Your best bet to update these links is to search for the files after closing whole Whonix git.

For example for the link https://github.com/Whonix/Whonix/blob/master/whonix_shared/etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc you would only search for kdmrc.

Then you find:
./packages/kde-kdm-autologin/etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc.anondist

And that corresponding link is:
https://github.com/Whonix/kde-kdm-autologin/blob/master/etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc.anondist
