I changed the graphics controller in Virtualbox from VMSVGA to VBoxVGA and it works with the background image.
You have to figure it out first, because after the installation the VMSVGA is used by default.

That is very weird.

VMSVGA is the correct choice. VBoxVGA is legacy.
