Whonix-Gateway stuck at generating locales during dist-upgrade

Hi all,

I recently installed Whonix-Gateway in CLI mode on Ubuntu 24.04 by following the instructions on the wiki and configured it to use Tor via an obfs4 bridge. I control it via Virtual Machine Manager. (The file I downloaded to install Whonix is Whonix-Xfce-17.0.3.0.Intel_AMD64.qcow2.libvirt.xz). Then I did a sudo apt-get dist-upgrade which got stuck at generating locales; I waited for an hour and there was no progress reported at all.

After a forced reset I did a sudo dpkg --configure -a and I’m back at square one: still stuck at configuring en-US.UTF-8…

What am I doing wrong? How do I get past this step? Thanks in advance.

Could be a low RAM issue. See:

Newer version available btw. So if you just installed, best to start with the newer version.

Thanks Patrick. Following your advice, I’m using the newer version and so far so good. Time to read anonymity tips on the wiki now
