Virtual Machines

Hello i have 610m gpu and and i have intel i5 cpu and 4 thread and 8gb ram and 1tb hdd is this enough for whonix and on my host machine i am running kali i tried everything in virt-manager but whonix is so laggy i am talking about computer performance not internet speed firstly if i install another lightweight distro instead of kali does this increase performance and what can i use instead of virt-manager for better perfomance ?

And lastly if i use another linux distro instead of whonix workstation like debian i think thats gonna increase the performance but i am just scaring of ip leak like ping random.com is it gonna leak my ip?

You could try that but I don’t have much hope.

The CPU is old, slow and presumably buggy.

Major slowdown is caused by CPU Mitigations (CPU hardware security bugs mitigations).

Note:

Primarily, I would recommend to upgrade to an SSD or - even better - buy a high performance computer.

Yes, you can. But you need to assign low amount of ram (less than 512) to Whonix-Gateway, for it to not start a desktop environment.
After that, increase CPU count for Whonix-Workstation.

Your device should be more than fine.

Well, Whonix-KVM is slow, even on the latest most powerful CPU (I9-14th generation), I think any slowness in KVM is either one of the following:
Too little RAM, causing swap usage = Major slowdown
Too few vCores = default vCores on Whonix KVM is 1-2, not good.
HD = Not recommended for any VM, not just Whonix, but the slowness should disappear after they first load up Whonix and a couple applications.

TL;DR: It’s totally possible and doable, and you can have decent-ish performance. (about as decent as one can get with sloppy GPU acceleration on KVM/Qemu)
