Upgrade whonix template in place

Can I upgrade a whonix template in place as it is based on debian?

Also, do I have to do this for every new version? Can’t I just keep using apt upgrade as a normal debian? I didn’t understand why templates needs to be replaced, this consumes a lot of bandwidth and I’ve been preferring the minimals, which I plan to do for whonix.

Also, how to preserve installed packages? Just anotate it in a vault?

Whonix is using the same terminology as Debian for it:

For major version upgrades such as Whonix 15 to Whonix 16 you either need a release upgrade. See above link.

What is better? Upgrade or Image Re-Installation? See Update vs Image Re-Installation.

At time of writing, no minimal templates are available for Qubes-Whonix.

  • Release upgrade: should be preserved.
  • New template installation: needs to be done manually.
