I’ve followed everything step by step mentioned in the docs page and setup a password less superuser & built inside Debian trixie in UTM by following this Whonix for MacOs installation . I’ve used the 18.1.3.5-developers-only version because the last stable version was 3 years back & needed debian 12 so as per the docs I used Debian 13. After several warnings & stuff the build completed with 0 errors & generated tar as well as a raw file. I ignored the the later as it’s meant be for developers and extracted and imported the tar files to the UTM files. But after importing them I can only see a TTY login screen and none of my passwords works. I specified the --flavor whonix-gateway-lxqt and --flavor whonix-workstation-lxqt options just like the documentation. What am I doing wrong?
We probably need a lot more information to help here. Can you share the full build log from both the Gateway and Workstation builds?
(Also note that image builds may be broken in general right now; apt recently decided it didn’t like the Tor Project keyring used as part of the build process. The issue should be fixed soon, and isn’t a security issue for existing builds, but it’s possible that it messed your build up.)
Is there any older stable build I can use?
Potentially related:
Console Lockdown
But I don’t see how that could go wrong when building an image using derivative-maker.
It’s a red herring (distraction). Ignore.
Details: Checkout Version
18.0.8.7-stable version doesn’t seem to be exist. Atlease not in the Whonix/derivative-maker repo. Only 18.0.8.7-developers-only
Confirmed.
However, 18.0.8.7-developers-only is fine. Ignore the absence of -stable appendix tag. Even if it existed it would be exactly the same with the -developers-only tag. Documentation will be updated.
18.1.3.4 might be blessed stable in a few days. Pending testing and release announcement writing.
In any case, I don’t think this is a version choice issue.
Ok glad to hear that. Can we expect an official build for M4 chips? Just like amd64 arch build? Also according to the documentation it’s possible to build the virtual box vms from an amd64 machine right? If so technically we can build using amd64 docker as well?
Also tried with 18.1.3.4 still stuck at tty shell. Even after a new version. I’m doing everything as per the docs and after the build is done it clearly says 0 errors. Still I’m getting localhost login and I can’t login using the account that I’ve created. There must be something wrong. Also can we get some instructions on how to build using docker? We can use –platform=linux/amd64 to emulate x86 arch to build the image for virtualbox if UTM has issues.
Expect nothing.
As pointed out on the wiki page, it’s unsupported.
I don’t know.
There’s a docker folder. → derivative-maker/docker at master · Whonix/derivative-maker · GitHub
Development discussion:
Consider it unsupported.
