Tor has no connection when using VPN on host ubuntu 16.04. works without VPN

I’m running whonix in virtualbox on ubuntu 16.04. Using VPN from IPvanish.

My problem is that tor will load everything fine when not using the VPN on my host but when I do connect to the VPN on the host tor will not load anything but firefox on the host will.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Does TBB work on the host while the VPN is running?
