Sometimes when you click paste, it'll paste a picture

There’s a bug I’d like to report. So I copied this link right here https://www.reddit.com/r/Whonix/comments/1dxk1gn/how_to_install_whonix_on_linux_ubuntu_mint_etc/ ok, and then I took a couple of screenshots of that webpage (just in case that tutorial gets deleted, and eventually I will ask to have that tutorial deleted but not until I upload my new and improved one) and then I went here on Whonix and I clicked paste and the screenshot I just took, got uploaded instead of the link I just copied.

So I copied a link and instead of pasting the link, it pasted a picture (a screenshot I just took).

And this is not the first time this has happened. It’s happened to me a couple of times already, where I’ll click paste and it’ll paste a picture. So it happened to me for like the third time just now and so I decided to finally let you know about this bug.

So yeah sometimes when you click paste instead of pasting whatever text you’ve copied, it’ll paste a picture that you’ve recently uploaded here on Whonix, or, it’ll even paste a screenshot that you’ve recently taken. It’s a very weird bug and it’s happened at least 3 times to me now.

This might not be a bug but just a confusing feature.

It’s web developers trying to be helpful. DIscourse - the forum software we’re using - a third-party Open Source project (and maybe reddit) have (probably JavaScript based) functionality that automatically converts text into images when pasted.

Dude so here’s what happened, so I copied a link I wanted to paste here, and then I took a couple of screenshots which of course were saved to my screenshots folder in the Pictures folder, then I came here and hit paste meaning to paste the link I copied and lo and behold it pasted the screenshot I just took.

Also this right here has happened to me at least twice on this website, so I’ll upload a picture to this website and then go copy some text and when I hit paste (meaning to paste the text) it pastes the most recent picture I uploaded.

So this is clearly a bug and it’s happened a few times to me now.

And the most recent one where it pasted my screenshot, like how did that happen? That screenshot was saved to my hard drive, how did that happen?

Could be a feature by by the screenshot utility to save the most recent
screenshot to clipboard.

So this just happened the other day. I copied some text that I wanted to paste here in a message I was making, but then I decided to screenshot something, these screenshots were stored on my hard drive in my screenshots folder. Then I came back here to this website to paste the text in my message. When I clicked paste instead of pasting the text I had copied earlier, it literally pasted the screenshot I had just taken which should be impossible cause it was stored on my hard drive. Now that’s a serious bug that needs to be patched.

This has happened multiple times to me over the past few weeks of using this website. For instance this has happened more than once, I’ll upload pics to this site in a message I’m making and I’ll go copy text or a link, I’ll come back to this site and click paste and instead of pasting the text, it pastes the picture I uploaded to this site.

This is a bug and I really hope you can patch it. I’m using firefox on Ubuntu 24.04

That right there freaks me out, how did it paste my screenshot? I jumped in my seat when I saw that.

The root cause is not this website. This website does not control the content of your clipboard. The software on your computer does.

Could be a feature by by the screenshot utility to save the most recent screenshot to clipboard.

At time of writing, the Whonix project has not written clipboard handling or screenshot related source code.

Therefore the bug most likely isn’t in Whonix’s source code.

Options:

  • You need to change the settings of your screenshot tool, if it has settings to change this behavior.
  • Or you need to use a different screenshot tool which does not have this behavior or where this is at least configurable.
  • Or remember to copy text right before pasting. Not making a screenshot meanwhile.
  • Or you can use a tool which can show/manage the content of clipboard.

All of this is unspecific to Whonix.

For all of this, Self Support First Policy for Whonix is applicable.

You’re right it’s obviously a bug with my clipboard but it’s only happened on this site and I’ve been using this site a lot lately and it’s happened at least 3 times now so far. Only on this site. I’ll have to report this to r/Ubuntu got another weird bug to report. Man I’ve had so many bugs on Linux.
