Upgrading Whonix 8 to Whonix 9

– You cannot upgrade using apt-get dist-upgrade or you will break the packaging system!

– You can upgrade using these instructions: https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Upgrading_Whonix_8_to_Whonix_9

If you want to build from source code, see:

https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Dev/Build_Documentation

Thanks to everyone who made this test release possible!

Changlog between 8.6.6.7 and 9:

- whonixcheck: output

– KVM → (Thanks to HulaHoop.)

– whonix-gw-kde-desktop-conf: no longer use custom wallpaper (mountain mist) for Whonix-Gateway. Only use wallpapers from Debian repository for security reasons. (https://github.com/Whonix/Whonix/issues/318) Will now default to KDE’s default wallpaper. (Thanks to https://github.com/HulaHoopWhonix for suggesting it)

– tb-updater: fix stream isolation (proxy) settings, make it work without transparent proxy as well

– updated frozen repository

[/html]

looks good.

However ran into some problems when doing non-conventional setups, for example, when disabling controlport filter, whonixcheck refuses to work completely and so does timesync. The ethernet taskbar icon also has a permanent red X on it too.

Thanks for testing!

This is expected. Disabling CPFP requires a few more settings. I just now wrote instructions for doing so:

Very briefly tested them. Would be nice if you could test them as well.

This is expected. It’s because network is managed by ifupdown and network-manager-kde is only installed by default to aid VPN users due to popular request. It would be a bit nicer if it wasn’t red, though. Don’t know if that is possible.

It wasn’t that way when CPFP was enabled, what can I search for, for a solution?

I’ll try and test the other things for disabling the filter

control-port-filter: unrecognized service

Sure? I don’t think it’s related.

No idea.

Stopping a service isn’t possible anymore when the init script has been set -x. Updated the instructions to first stop it, then disable it.

Sure? I don't think it's related.

You’re right. The same happens in the gateway vm too. I’ll post here if I find something for it.

I will continue with CPFP new instructions.

A small detail, the Whonix repo icon’s top looks squished (Whonix gw vm)

The error in the workstation is now gone but sdwdate still stalls.

Managed to make the red X go away by using this guide: How to fix Wired Network interface "Device not managed" error in Debian or Kali Linux? - blackMORE Ops

Link down.

Are you sure you got the DISPATCH_PREREQUISITE=“” setting in /etc/sdwdate.d/50_anon_dist_con_check_plugin_user? If yes…

Watch log in terminal 1.

tail -f /var/log/sdwdate.log

Restart sdwdate in terminal 2.

sudo service sdwdate restart

The log should include.

ce74fbfc-c800-4648-91cd-2e8dae85cbd3: dispatching prerequisite (SDW_MODE: startup) (CURL: curl.anondist-orig) (LD_PRELOAD: ): true ce74fbfc-c800-4648-91cd-2e8dae85cbd3: DISPATCH_PREREQUISITE exited 0, continuing...

Does it include that?

Otherwise were does it hang?

Whonix 9 has been released:

Therefore no more testing of this version required.
