Merge 2 menus of sdwdate tray (better UX)

If user will hover over sdwdate menu he will have 3 steps to go to the menu:

mergesdwdatemenu

mergesdwdatemenu2

whereas we can save these clicks and miss mouse movements by having one menu:

Whonix-gw
Show Tor status
Tor control panel
Show sdwdate status
Open sdwdate’s log
Restart sdwdate
Stop sdwdate
Exit

These actions are per-VM. Not global.

There will be multiple VMs listed there once started such as anon-whonix.

Thats not the case, each GW-appVM will have its own icon/systray in the taskbar for sdwdate.

2sdwdate

so its not that the list will contain all vms inside the menu and we choose which vm sdwdate to restart, read logs…etc

True, each Whonix-Gateway has its own sdwdate-gui systray. But every Whonix-Workstation is getting an entry in sdwdate-gui. When right clicking on sdwdate-gui:

  • sys-whonix
  • anon-whonix
  • disp…

To see this both sys-whonix and anon-whonix need to be running.

Start at least 1 Whonix-Workstation to see it.

Already there 2 connected to that gw, i dont see anything changed in the tray.

If you don’t see any Whonix-Workstation being registered in sdwdate-gui, then that’s a usability issue or bug.

Followed instructions here, doesnt work as the icon you posted.

which i already posted.

no special stuff with GW as mentioned only change name and based it on gw-template and give network to newly created GW-appvm as per:

The only requirement is that the newly created sys-whonix is based on the whonix-gw-16 Template and has a distinctive VM name, so it is not confused with other VMs.

You also need the follow he instructions from the Multiple Whonix-Gateway page.

and

You also need to follow the instructions on the Multiple Whonix-Workstation wiki page.

I think wiki pages

are no longer useful.

yes it is a bug in 4.2.

Multiple Whonix-Workstation ™ + https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Multiple_Whonix-Workstation#If_you_are_using_the_default_sys-whonix_as_gateway works for me:

  • There is only 1 sdwdate-gui systray started by sys-whonix.
  • Multiple VMs (sys-whonix, anon-whonix, anon-whonix-2, disp2482) are all showing up.

Multiple Whonix-Workstation + https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Multiple_Whonix-Workstation#If_you_are_using_a_gateway_other_than_sys-whonix also works for me.

  • There is only 1 sdwdate-gui systray started by sys-whonix-2.
  • Multiple VMs (sys-whonix, anon-whonix, anon-whonix-2, disp2482) are all showing up.

But I had on issue before I could make it work.

File /usr/local/etc/sdwdate-gui.d/50_user.conf

Had:

gateway=sys-whonix2

But the actual VM name I used was:

gateway=sys-whonix-2

I see, in this case i leave it to other users if they will have the same thing. (unlikely that someone will figure out there is something missing/broken…)

Please try.

This is due to missing qvm-tags in dom0. This issue can happen in corer cases. [1]

Documentation was updated just now.

See:

Add qvm-tag anon-gateway to the newly created App Qube.

See:

Add qvm-tag anon-vm to the newly created App Qube.

Please refer to the documentation. It’s now updated on how to add the qvm-tags.
