Yeah, messy, would indeed be better if it was the same top level domain. Arguably, .com is more popular, easier to type (mobile devices have a .com but not .org button) but it is what it is due to domain squatters. So this cannot be fixed now without paying off domain squatters or lawyers to free the squatted domain.
