So I’m on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
My PC is quite old. It was built in 2015 my PC specs are
AMD FX 4300 quad core CPU (which was originally released in 2012),
AMD Radeon RX 550 4GB GDDR5,
16GB DDR3 ram, Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 motherboard which was originally released in 2013. And back in October I installed an SSD.
So yeah last summer I installed whonix on my PC (at the time my PC had an HDD in it) I used the whonix installer for Ubuntu so it installed VirtualBox 7.0.16 and right away whonix was kinda slow and it would occasionally freeze up on me. Now the freezing up was a show stopper for me. I’d have like about 40 tabs open in the TOR browser, I’d be right in the middle of my work and it’d freeze up on me. If I couldn’t fix this freezing up problem I’d abandon whonix and go over to tails. So I asked for help on Reddit and someone said give gateway 512 MB of ram and 1 core, give workstation 4 gigs of ram and 2 cores, which leaves just 1 core for the host OS cause I’ve got a 4 core CPU.
If I remember correctly this did not solve the freezing up problem.
But back in October I installed an SSD and wow, whonix ran so smooth and the freezing up problem went away. I used whonix for months and months and it never froze up on me even once! It was terrific.
Now, recently I completely uninstalled both virtualbox and whonix and then reinstalled them using
bash ./whonix-xfce-installer-cli --oracle-repo
and it installed VB 7.1.10 which is the latest version of VB and whonix right away started freezing up on me which horrified me so I uninstalled VB and whonix and installed whonix doing this
bash ./whonix-xfce-installer-cli
Which installed virtualbox 7.0.16 (thinking that the freezing up would go away if I went back to VB 7.0.16) so yeah literally today I did this, I just uninstalled VB and whonix and then reinstalled them following the whonix installer (without the --oracle-repo option) and then today after using whonix for maybe a few hours, whonix workstation suddenly froze up on me, I had like 30 or so tabs open, I was in the middle of my work and BOOM! Workstation froze up on me.
I’m depressed. I feel like crying to be honest. I thought the SSD had solved the freezing up problem.
So I’ve got two options. I hear KVM offers better performance for virtualization than virtualbox does, so I could try KVM with whonix and see if the freezing up goes away, or I could just abandon whonix altogether and go over to tails.
I love the shared folder in whonix so I’d like to stick with whonix so I think I’m gonna give KVM a shot.
Patrick, do you think KVM would solve my freezing up problem once and for all? I checked and my old PC is compatible with KVM.
Patrick, do you think the freezing up is cause of how old my hardware is? My cpu came out in 2012 so yea it’s very old at this point.
I wonder why I was able to go months and months without it freezing up on me?
Man I wish I could just buy a new PC but I can’t afford that right now unfortunately.
I guess I need to start watching or reading tutorials on how to install KVM on Ubuntu.
Thanks for the assistance.
