Is whonix broken with VirtualBox? Not bootable or won't download (specific error message below)

When I try to download from the main download page for whonix for virtualbox the download is painfully slow until it fails around the 1 GB mark.
I have also attempted the following

  • Downloading via curl command on terminal (I’m on Debian 12/Bookworm)
  • Downloading torrent in terminal
  • CLI installer
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled virtualbox
  • Tried the official mirror links (only one downloaded and it doesn’t even work more details below)
  • Searched relentlessly on DuckDuckGo and this forum and nothing has helped with my situation so far
  • Tried downloading Whonix on the official front page with my mobile HOTSPOT in case my internet was making the download fail-the download still failed

I tried installing a mirror, some of the links failed to download like the original page but whonix-cli-17.0.3.4 OVA file DID download…however I get an error when trying to boot the gateway on VirtualBox with this mirror (and so far the only working link to download).

A pop up window that says “The virtual machine failed to boot. That might be caused by a missing operating system or misconfigured boot order. Mounting an operating system install DVD might solve this problem. Selecting an ISO file will attempt to mount it after the dialog is closed.”

And on the VM itself it says “No bootable medium found! Please insert a bootable medium and reboot.”

I’ve used Whonix on virtualbox before when I had ubuntu, I recently switched to Debian 12 and have had these issues since when trying to install whonix with virtualbox. I also never had my download fail for the regular whonix virtualbox download webpage on whonix org website but since I switched to Debian I can’t download it normally as said. When I was able to download from the front download page before (as oppose to commands, mirrors, or other alternatives) I was able to make a VM and boot whonix just fine so I really don’t know why this is happening.

I’m really just at a loss for what to do, please read ahead and help a fellow out ;-;
