Installing guest addon on gateway fails and problems with apt-get update

Reason: Copying some data that isn’t all that easy to copy by typing.

I’m not very good at *nix so this doesn’t tell me much. I can’t figure out if it is really the FTP that has a problem resolving (I don’t think it should be as it seems to be a very common ftp?), if I’ve done something wrong somewhere or if whonix is blocking me because the thing I’m doing could be consider as a security hole. If I had to guess I would say that we are running on a too new version of debian that doesn’t have a vbox guest addon package available.

sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends virtualbox-guest-dkms virtualbox-guest-utils
404 Not Found on multiple packages.

Apper:
E: http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/testing/contrib virtualbox-guest-utils i386 4.3.2-dfsg-1+b1 is not /yet) available (temporary failure resolving 'ftp.us.debian.org

I’m having some problem with apt-get update on both workstation and gateway. It looks very similar, I’m not able to determine if its normal or not:

If someone could point me in the right direction I’d be happy:) Best regards

Freshly created, please try this:

Thank you brother, looks like it helped (running it now).

I updated the wiki little, sadly I could not give a reason.

Reason to why I updated was to make it a little more clear to newbies (like me) what a hash sum mismatch might look like and to improve the searchability a bit. When you posted the reference I realised I obviously should have googled this a bit more before asking, sorry for the extra work.

I also added a apt-get dist-upgrade, as it seems I had a lot of packages that needed upgrading so figured it was worth mentioning.

It might also be worth adding that it might have been the mismatch that caused apper to fail updating, but since I wasn’t sure of that, I refrained from doing so.

EDIT:
I’m going to add something to the wiki in case someone else is in my situation, which is that the guest addons doesn’t start due to lacking linux headers. I’ll do after you accept/reject my change to the current wiki.
Thanks again for your help, you should be getting my coins from BTCFog soon, sorry it wasn’t more.

No worries.

Thank you for your donation and for these improvements. They’re now reviewed.

Apper most likely failed due to the same issue. In next Whonix version Apper won’t be installed by default anymore, since it causes more confusion than it helps with updating.
