Idea: Network independent Whonix

This is just an idea, what if instead of making Whonix just about Tor, we actually revamp how Whonix-Gateway works.

Ok, So instead of current setup where it assumes the user wants to use Tor, what if we extend the default setup GUI, to include options for other networks, proxychains, or even no networks at all ?

Some users might want to run Whonix without any anonymity network on top, others might choose something like I2P, etc, some might opt to use proxychains and configure it themselves, etc.

I think this would be relatively “easy-ish” to implement, and it would save Whonix developers and maintainers resources and precious time in the future and beyond.

So, instead of making different edition of Whonix (messy due to lack of developer resources, requires more testing and stuf that Whonix doesn’t have) we would just clamp everything together in one big edition ?

This idea exist since the beginning: Whonix Framework

Unfortunately, I don’t think this isn’t easy or easier. At least, I don’t know a design that would be easier.

If someone wanted to suggest an easier design, they would need to argue on the technical level, source code level: packages, package names, meta packages, derivative-maker and how the existing and new design compares.
