How to fully uninstall Whonix and VirtualBox?

Well I already have VirtualBox and Whonix installed so how I do completely uninstall both of them so it’s like they were never installed to begin with?

See:

“You can simply delete the VMs you wish to remove using the virtual machine manager.”
What is the virtual machine manager?

And I don’t understand step 2 at all.

Patrick, come on dude, if you know how to completely uninstall whonix and VirtualBox from my computer then just tell me. Just tell me please? Surely you must know how?

I mean I’m simply trying to uninstall Whonix and VirtualBox, how hard can it be?

VirtualBox can be uninstalled just like any other deb or flatpak app. You can ask GPTchat

Ok and how do I completely uninstall Whonix? I want both VB and Whonix completely off my PC cause I’m going to re-install it using the kicksecure method.

So what is the kicksecure method, and you know nani I would like a second opinion here, can you go here and scroll all the way down to the bottom cause that’s where the relevant conversation takes place VirtualBox Installer for Linux downgrades version from Oracle provided version to Debian provided version - #43

Tell me what you think about that. Before I even try that I just wanna get VB and whonix off my system completely.

I use KVM

That doesn’t make things any easier here.

Off-topic.

KVM must not be discussed here as it is unrelated would add further confusion.

Buddy, he literally maintains the entire forum, websites, support, documentation, development and research pretty much by himself.

Imagine the ungodly amount of free labor and effort this guy has invested, while showing this level of patience.

I ask ridiculous questions too, but seeing it first hand really makes me realize how lucky we are. It’s like Linus Torvald opening a forum and literally answering every single question 24/7. He does this so routinely and realiably, that most people probably don’t even realize who they’re talking to.
:expressionless:

@Patrick seriously, thank you man.

Listen if you go on Google and search “how to install whonix on Ubuntu” this tutorial right here pops up at the very top of the search results https://www.reddit.com/r/Whonix/s/QrCADanj23 and I am the one who created that tutorial.

And now I’m going to create a new tutorial with more up to date information. And I’m going to include everything in this tutorial, everything they need to know in order to get whonix up and running on Ubuntu. I’m even going to tell them how to uninstall Whonix and VirtualBox. I want this tutorial to be as complete as possible. I’m going to put everything I know about whonix into this tutorial.

It’s my way of giving back to the community. As a newbie I know how to create tutorials that other newbies can understand. Well and there’s also one problem, basically all the tutorials on the web on how to install Whonix on Ubuntu, they’re basically all wrong, none of them worked for me. So I want to create a tutorial on how to install Whonix on Ubuntu that one, actually works, and two, the average layman can understand. Because you have to speak in layman’s terms for the average user. We’re not all computer experts here. You have to explain it as if you were talking to a 5 year old child. You know, explain it like I’m 5. Seriously, Linux has a learning curve. Linux can be downright confusing at times.

But I’ve got one problem. I don’t know how to completely uninstall both VirtualBox and Whonix from my PC as if they were never installed to begin with, so will someone please tell me how to do this?

This is the holdup right now, I don’t know how to completely uninstall both VirtualBox and Whonix. I want them completely gone off my machine as if they were never installed to begin with.

Is there anyone here who can simply tell me how to do this?

:arrow_up::arrow_up: I updated my reply there just now, so make sure you read the whole thing. So this is it, this is the last hurdle in my way. I simply don’t know how to completely uninstall both VirtualBox and Whonix.

Remove virtualbox:

sudo apt-get remove --purge virtualbox*
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo groupdel vboxusers vboxsf

Remove VM:

e-coin I see you’re on Mac. I’m actually hesitant to try what you’re telling me to do since you’re on Mac.

Linux is quite different from Mac.

Do you even own a Linux machine in your home?

I’m just saying that I’m hesitant to try, what you’re telling me to do, cause you’re on Mac and Linux is quite different from Mac.

Is there a Linux user here who knows how to completely uninstall both VirtualBox and Whonix from my Linux Ubuntu machine as if they were never installed to begin with?

I’m actually getting to the point I wanna start crying. I wanna pull my hair out and start crying. The only person who steps up and helps me is a Mac user and I refuse to use his instructions because Linux is a completely different beast from Mac. Yeah e-coin, I’m very hesitant to use your instructions as they were done on Mac. But I’m on Linux.

I can’t believe that this is being so difficult. I cannot believe it is this difficult. Please this is the last hurdle in my way.

Please, is there a Linux user here who knows how to completely uninstall both VirtualBox and Whonix from my Linux Ubuntu machine as if they were never installed to begin with?

There’s got to be a Linux expert here who knows how to completely uninstall both VirtualBox and Whonix from my Linux Ubuntu machine as if they were never installed to begin with?

Where are you?

Do you personally use Whonix on Linux? And if the answer is yes to that, how come you don’t know how to completely uninstall both VirtualBox and Whonix?

@extraextra Do you personally use Whonix on Linux? And if the answer is yes to that, how come you don’t know how to completely uninstall both VirtualBox and Whonix?

Will someone please just help me?

I know.

But you’re refusing to make an effort to search for instructions elsewhere. This has been discussed before on the internet.

With today’s search engines and AI tools, it’s easier than ever before. But you pretend as if this forum is the only place to find out how to do this.

The purpose of the forum is to help with things you cannot find assistance for elsewhere. It’s help so you can help yourself. The purpose isn’t for other people to do your job.

I perceive you as potentially trolling. Someone just told you.

And you reply as if that didn’t happen. This isn’t the first time. It’s assumed that you actually care about replies, read them carefully, wait, reflect, read again, and maybe then consider taking time for free from other people on the internet.

Maybe you’re not trolling but have a reading comprehension deficiency?

You’re the first one to make a big deal about how to uninstall, demanding extensive guidance. Maybe this isn’t for you.

It seems like you’re putting in a lot of effort, and it’s clear you care about this. However, it’s important to recognize that sometimes, despite our best intentions, we may not be able to achieve certain things.

That’s just a screenshot that can be found on search engines. It suffices to communicate the essential information. It’s just an alternative to safe time compared to creating a new screenshot.

I went a head and added that screenshot to the wiki.

At some point - and this is such a case - you just need to use your best judgement, see if it makes sense, take a risk and simply try.

Using a computer is like learning to drive. It’s not about following exact, step-by-step instructions for every move. You don’t learn to drive by being told to “turn your head exactly 45 degrees to check for cars, then keep the steering wheel perfectly straight for 1 minute and 43 seconds, then turn the wheel exactly 45 degrees.

In reality, driving is about reacting to the road, making adjustments based on conditions, and using judgment. The instructions are necessarily rough: “Check your mirrors,” “Stay in your lane,” “Turn when it feels right based on the curve.” Similarly, a software documentation can only provide rough guidance. It can help point you in the right direction, but it can’t account for every nuance of human behavior or real-world complexity.
