Is this normal? It’s happened to me three times now. Specifically, while using TOR and opening multiple tabs at once, my workstation suddenly freezes and nothing happens. I have to restart it. Is there a solution because it’s incredibly annoying?
No, what installation or virtualization method are you using? Are you currently using Whonix 18?
Whonix Workstation in live mode. I have the latest version of Whonix.
Please specify:
- Which virtualizer you are using, and what version of it if applicable (i.e. VirtualBox 7.0.12)
- Which host OS you are using, and what version of it (i.e. Windows 11, or Debian 13)
Virtual Box 6.
Windows 10
Try upgrading to a newer version of VirtualBox. All versions of VirtualBox 6 are no longer supported by Oracle and we do not test against it any longer. Windows 10 is also end-of-life, which comes with security implications and may prevent you from installing newer versions of VirtualBox now or in the future.
(If you need to upgrade your host OS, Kicksecure 18 is suitable for use on physical hardware. Whonix is based on Kicksecure, and should run on top of Kicksecure quite easily.)
It occurs even with minimal load—only a browser with one tab and a text editor open. I initially thought it was an issue with VirtualBox, but it happens with KVM too.
It doesn’t happen to me though, so it isn’t pervasive. You might try this:
(Link goes to “Additional CPU Cores” instructions)
That’s interesting. I though it only happened Linux users. Do you have older hardware?
Fewer CPU cores assigned to it reduces how often it occurs.
-
i’ve been having this issue very often lately, with the Workstation 18 update,
sometimes multiple times per day
-
never comes back from the freeze state. i have to turn off the vm from the VBox close button and boot again
-
i still can’t find if it’s an app causing it, but i thought normally apps could not crash the whole system
-
Host is Linux (Debian) + Virtual Box 7.1.6
-
Number of CPUs = 3
thanks for the support
