Forum.onion unable to connect

Got another weird problem. Using Tor Browser, home page, click on forum link I get unable to connect. Using Startpage, Whonix, forum, I get the clearnet page. Click on the onion available icon I get the same unable to connect. Its like the onion site is down for me. I dont know any other onion sites to try. On the home page, click the link to test if using Tor, it tells me I am. Also updates work fine with no errors. The ahmia search page loads fine with an onion address. Did I not pay the bill?

PS, Tor Browser on host, I can get to the Whonix Onion site. I am using kvm whonix. Ideas? Thanks for any help.

The Whonix Forum Onion URL works for me, so here are a few ideas:

  1. Update Tor Browser.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Regenerate a new Tor circuit in the Tor Browser (Ctrl + Shift + L).

Thanks for the reply FranklyFlawless. I fixed this problem. 1. TB is most recent. 2. Restarting the host did not fix. 3. This did not fix, but I waited 10 minutes, did it again, did not fix, waited again. Repeat and fixed. This is way beyond my abilities to explain.

Is the tor domain of the website down for any known cause?

This problem has returned. This is what it says: The connection was refused when attempting to contact forums.dds6qkxpwdeubwucdiaord2xgbbeyds25rbsgr73tbfpqpt4a6vjwsyd.onion.

Connection not encrypted

This only happens to Whonix Onion site. Kicksecure Onion works fine. I made no changes to tor-browser and the gateway. My previous fix does not work. Has the website address somehow become an exception somewhere in the gateway? I can work around this problem. Thanks

Is down, I’ve tested it in 3 machines and two different devices

The webpage at http://forums.dds6qkxpwdeubwucdiaord2xgbbeyds25rbsgr73tbfpqpt4a6vjwsyd.onion might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Hi folks, I had to register this account over clearnet to say… I cannot access the onion version of either this forum or the whonix homepage. This has been the case for the last couple of days. I tried new circuits, new identity, restart Whonix Gateway, everything. I have good reason to believe the onion website is down.

Who shall we contact? Besides this post, I saw another by @spartack in the Website category with no response. Maybe the onion website maintainer cannot see these posts either because they also prefer to connect via onion?

By the way, the Kicksecure onion has been working just fine since I registered over onion a few days ago. Same username, if you’re curious.

Unable to connect

The connection was refused when attempting to contact forums.dds6qkxpwdeubwucdiaord2xgbbeyds25rbsgr73tbfpqpt4a6vjwsyd.onion.

I have this issue constantly, the forum seems to be down more often than it is up these days. It has not been like this in previous years, ever. It is not a circuit issue, because it doesn’t time out; rather “connection is refused”.

After writing this it was down for 12 hours. It is now down again. I no longer expect the onion forum to be available when I open it. I hope this is investigated sooner rather than later.

No action planned. As per:

It doesn’t make sense to me that you are fine with (probably) less than 75% uptime without even investigating. This much downtime is not expected from onion services.

+1. I see this also in the downtime the whonix onion apt repo gets.
See my thread on this:

Whonix maintainers should, or can do, a better job at keeping their
onion services online.

Investigation has been completed.

It’s not DOS related. I can rule that out, because I have other other onions with non-pubic onion domain names. (Such as for fetching e-mail over onion.)

The only way to fix a broken onion is the following cumbersome procedure.

Tor / Tor network issues / bugs.

  1. stop tor@name.service on the server

  2. manually delete Tor consensus and state files on the server

/var/lib/tor-instances/name/cached-certs
/var/lib/tor-instances/name/cached-microdesc-consensus
/var/lib/tor-instances/name/cached-microdescs.new
/var/lib/tor-instances/name/state

(Not all files may need deletion. Perhaps “only” deleting the state file would be sufficient.)

  1. restart tor@name.service on the server

  2. restart tor@default on local system

These were the only steps requires to temporarily “fix” this. (I wouldn’t call this a “fix”, not even a workaround.)

This is not a safe procedure and should not be required. Not something a “real” onion host requiring location privacy can afford. (Not a safe procedure because it replaces Tor entry guards.)

It’s also not a server configuration issue, because I have multiple servers with identical configuration except for the onion service domain names and private keys. So no other action was required to fix this other than the cumber some procedure.

I have had many problems with the forum .onion in the past. But it is working perfectly for me today.

OK, so, what’s this? What do I do now to reach whonix project’s onion hidden servers so that I can complete my whonix template updates quickly instead of wasting hours’ of time on this as I am forced to keep trying with different tor circuits, etc.etc.
