After a few weeks of happy working with Whonix under VM I currently can no longer open the Workstation. Upon launching I get the following error:
Fatal! Could not read from the boot medium.
Any suggestion? Cloning the workstation did not help either. I could reinstallin whonix but it zould be convenient to be able to recover my old workstation…

Sounds like this is happening at the virtualizer level - most likely not Whonix related.
Try searching “virtualbox fatal could not read boot medium”. Many hits.
Worst case: snapshot / disk image is corrupted. (VirtualBox is notorious for unreliable storage - even the forums recommend not using snapshots.)
Best case: you put a non-bootable CD in the virtual drive. Eject it and boot.
