Extracting Whonix-Gateway and Whonix-Workstation .libvirt.xz files

Hey all,

I am running Ubuntu 15.04.

I am extracting the QCOW2 files with the command located in the instructions here Whonix ™ for KVM

tar -xvf Whonix-Gateway*.libvirt.xz

tar -xvf Whonix-Workstation*.libvirt.xz

However when they extract, it appears they are not sparse or something - they expand out, it got up to ~30gb before I cancelled the extraction.

Can anyone advise how I can fix this?!

The file manager will give you the full virtual size when you select the image but in reality they’re 1.5 GB large each. What file system are you using? ext4 supports sparse files.

I have the EXACT same problem. I am on linux mint 17.2 64 bits.
I uncompress with gui or with command line and result is the same.
Whonix gateway gets 107 GIGABYTES uncompressed.

if the size is apparent, is there no way to like copy to ntfs then copy back or something?
