Perhaps mention that it is an OS etc along with “As handy as an app - delivering maximum anonymity and security.” or reword it on the Homepage, so first time readers can easily and quickly grasp what Whonix is without clicking and reading a whole wiki.
This is difficult to solve. There are different types of readers on a spectrum of technical skills, time available and attention spawns.
Type 1) very non-technical laymen not knowing jargon
Operating system? What’s that?
Debian? What’s that?
Linux? What’s that?
Tor network? What’s that?
Virtual machines? What’s that?
VM? What’s that?
VPN? What’s that?
→ confused → bounced
Type 2) basic computer knowledge but still laymen
Operating system? Does that mean I need to replace my Windows?
→ confused → bounced
Type 3) more knowledgeble computer users
They want to read things like:
virtual machines with Tor
Consists of two VMs: the Whonix-Gateway and the Whonix-Workstation. The former runs Tor processes and acts as a gateway, while the latter runs user applications on a completely isolated network.
Web site looks like it’s trying to sell me some shitty VPN software I don’t need.
They obviously know what a VPN is and that prior knowledge on VPNs might make them quick to judge on the website at hand.
There are various levels of complexity desired by different type of visitors. Our current design starts with the simplest, most high-level summary, avoiding trigger words that result in snap judgement bounces, before gradually revealing as much complexity as a reader wishes to consume.
