build script should provide better optical separation of build steps

When looking through the build log, it would be helpful if there was a clearer optical separation between build steps.

I needed to get rid of run-parts anyhow due to some unrelated issue ([Help-bash] run-parts, trap INT, read error) that messed up the error handler. From there it was little effort to implement this one. Done:
