Whonix-Gateway on Hardware

Hi
following steps in this page : https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Dev/Build_Documentation/Physical_Isolation/10 ; i would like to install Whonix Gateway on a hardware : Raspberry 2 or BeagleBone Black, really don’t know which to chose. (advice needed)
If i understand well :

  1. i follow this “tutorial” : STEPS
  2. this microcomputer must have a wifi dongle to do updates,
  3. i plug this microcomputer with a rj45 cable to my Workstation (could be a laptop),
  4. on"network connexions manager", i MUST use only the network connection from gateway to go to the internet,
  5. then i can download a VPN, proxy on Workstation and use them.

Comments ? Advices ?

Regards,

Not yet possible. Arm platform not yet supported. Needs development. Someone needs to contribute it. I am not aware of anyone working on it at present or planning to. Existing development thread about Raspberry:

Hi Patrick,
thanks for helping Whonix users. I’m not a coder, sorry, so i can’t help you in Whonix-ARM development. :-[

  1. if Rasperry and BeagleBone use ARM chips, we should update this section :
    https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Dev/Build_Documentation/Physical_Isolation/10#anonymous_use

  2. about Whonix-Gateway on Hardware
so, i think whonix-gateway could be easily installed on a mini-pc or a laptop ?
If so, this scheme should work ?
    LAPTOP 1 (WHONIX-GATEWAY HARDWARE) -----> ethernet cable -----> LAPTOP 2 (WORKSTATION)

  3. what do you think of using a Raspberry Pi as an onion router (in terms of security) ?

Thanks again.

Regards,

  1. Done.
  2. “Easy” is relative. I don’t see a reason why not.
  3. This is basically an i386 vs arm question? I have no opinion.

Hello,
concerning hardware and Whonix-Gateway, could Patrick give some examples of “small devices” using i386 architecture. It would be nice. I’m a little bit lost between mini-pcs, android-based devices, Raspberry Pi 2 alternatives etc.
We can surely find something interesting for +/- 100 dollars.

Thanks.

No, sorry, I don’t have any specific examples in mind, that I recommend and know to be still functional at present. The list is just inspiration for advanced users to pick up, research and improve.
