Leaving this here for myself later, I found https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=319435, saw that apparently some RPi firmware versions can boot from GPT partitions themselves, and tried to “fix” boot by:

  • changing the type code of the firmware partition on the GPT table to 0x0700, and
  • rearranging the partitions so that the firmware partition was the first partition according to the GPT table.

This did not work, the Pi’s disk access LED still flashes seven times (“kernel not found”) when attempting to boot from this disk.
