Tor Browser Starter bug

I had to reformat my computer and this time around installing everything I get the following error:

########################################################### ## torbrowser script bug. ## No panic. Nothing is broken. Just some rare condition ## has been hit. Try again later. There is likely a ## solution for this problem. Please see the Whonix News, ## Whonix User Help Forum and Whonix Documentation. ## https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Tor_Browser ## Please report this bug! ## ## BASH_COMMAND: cd “$home_folder/tor-browser_$TB_LANG/” ## exit_code: 1 ## ## output: /usr/lib/msgcollector/msgcollector ## output_opts: --icon /usr/share/icons/anon-icon-pack/tbupdate.ico --parentpid 24700 --identifier torbrowser --parenttty none --whoami user ## progressbaridx: ## ## Experts only: ## bash -x torbrowser ###########################################################

It will not let me connect to the browser, everything else is updated and working.

How do I fix this?

whonixcheck says everything is up to date?

If so… No idea how this could happen. Can you please run the following command and post the output here?

Whonix check is when the error window pops up. This is the results of the Whonix check:

Thanks.

This is it.

+ cd /home/user/tor-browser_en-US/
/usr/bin/torbrowser: line 293: cd: /home/user/tor-browser_en-US/: Permission denied

Did you backup/restore your tor-browser_en-US folder? I guess so. Would be totally fine also.

It’s a permission issue. Most likely you copied as root?

Please try if running the following commend works. And please report back if it does.

Consider also running the following command.

Yes, perhaps tb-starter should check if it has permission to cd into the folder beforehand to show some meaningful error message when there are permission issues.

It worked! Thank you so much. I spent hours putting the computer back together and was completely frustrated when that error popped up. I didn’t even think I got the permissions messed up when I did it.

Again…Thanks!

Glad to hear!

There will be a better error message in such cases in Whonix 12. Tracking this issue here:
