There's some slight lag while browsing the web using TOR browser is this normal?

I’m sorry, there’s supposed to be lag while typing in Whonix 18?

In Whonix 18 and even back on 17, there has always been some slight lag with opening new tabs, some slight lag with the mouse movement as well, like you know how you open menus and whatnot in the TOR browser, well there’s some slight lag with this, some slight lag with the mouse, when it comes to opening menus and right clicking and and selecting “open in new tab” and whatnot.

It’s hard to explain without being able to show you but there’s always been some lag in Whonix.

Just recently I decided to fire up the regular vanilla TOR browser on my host OS which is Ubuntu 24.04 and it was shocking to use a TOR browser which had no discernible lag. No lag while typing. No lag with the mouse movement. No detectable lag at all. And it was amazing! It was liberating! It was like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

Does kloak make mouse movement slightly laggy in Whonix? This lag with the mouse and opening and closing menus in TOR browser, is this being caused by kloak?

Or is it just me?

I mean there’s just all around some slight lag in the TOR browser on Whonix 18 and back on 17 too. In TOR browser, just opening new tabs, opening new webpages, opening menus, mouse movement, typing, there’s some slight lag to doing all these things. Is this normal?

Edit:

Now I do have an older machine. So is it cause my PC is old?

Just an FYI, my PC is quite old. It was built in 2015 my PC specs are

AMD FX 4300 quad core CPU (which was released in 2012),

AMD Radeon RX 550 4GB GDDR5,

16GB DDR3 ram,

Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 motherboard which was released in 2013. It’s got an SSD. And I have my PC hooked up to my 65 inch TCL TV.

Oh and for gateway, I’ve got it set to 1 core and 512MB of ram so it opens in CLI mode.

I gave workstation 2 cores and 4GB of ram.

Find out, try it out, test, click: Stop Kloak

Typing lag is expected.

And in Kloak broken after release-upgrade there’s no typing lag, because kloak isn’t running for the reporter after a release upgrade, which is unexpected.

I’ve had lag all around. I’ve always had lag in whonix. I had lag in whonix 17 and lag in whonix 18. I’m having lag now in whonix 18. I’ve always had lag in whonix. And not just for typing. Lag all around.

Is this normal?

As stated by Patrick above:

So yes, this is normal.

No you’re not understanding me!

I understand lag while typing is normal.

There is lag while just browsing the web. There is lag just opening and closing menus. While using the TOR browser, it’s laggy, there is just some slight lag to doing everything, this lag is in Whonix 18 and it was in Whonix 17 as well. This lag is only in the TOR browser, I repeat this lag is only in the TOR browser. Is this normal?

The mouse movement isn’t laggy but just browsing the web and opening and closing menus, there’s just some slight lag to it.

I used the regular TOR browser on my host OS and wow there’s no lag. It was refreshing to use the TOR browser without any discernible lag. But of course it’s not as secure as using Whonix but there’s no discernible lag which was just absolutely refreshing.

So please answer my question?

Listen, if you say this lag is normal, then I’m going to abandon Whonix and start using tails. Just be honest with me please?

There will be a lot of display latency using any television as a monitor, so replace it with a computer monitor instead.

No, my 2025 65 inch TCL TV has a PC mode and in this PC mode there is no lag whatsoever. There is only lag while using the TOR browser in Whonix.

There is no lag at all dude while using PC mode on my 65 inch TCL TV in fact it’s very snappy and responsive. Then I use the TOR browser in Whonix and there is just some slight lag.

So this slight lag that I’ve talked about extensively here, is NOT normal?

Again, I’m well aware the typing has some lag on purpose but I’m just getting lag while simply browsing the web and opening and closing menus and whatnot and it’s very annoying.

I said there is no lag with mouse movement in Whonix 18, this isn’t entirely accurate, I would say there is some very very slight lag to the mouse movement, but in the TOR browser in Whonix 18, there is some slight lag to doing anything and it’s only in the TOR browser I would say, there is no lag in the file manager. I was dealing with this lag in Whonix 17 as well. I’ve only been using Whonix for like 2 years. There’s always been some lag in the TOR browser while simply browsing the web.

If it’s normal then I’m going over to tails. If it isn’t normal then I’ll just come back to whonix when I get a new PC and see if the lag is still there. I understand whonix is more secure than tails but I just can’t stand the lag. It drives me crazy.

Again I understand lag while typing is normal but there’s some slight lag to doing anything in the TOR browser. And yes I would say the mouse movement has some slight lag as well.

And no it’s not caused by the TV, my 65 inch TCL has a PC mode and it’s very snappy and responsive, it feels just like I’m using a regular computer monitor.

If you are only noticing the lag in Tor Browser, it’s probably only slower because it’s running in a VM, which has no accelerated graphics. That lag is also expected, and switching to Tails in a VM won’t help. This is particularly likely since your PC is old. Running Tails on baremetal will probably give you much better performance, but Tails on baremetal has different security advantages and disadvantages compared to Whonix in VMs; whether this is “less secure” or “more secure” for you depends on your threat model.

If the lag is “everywhere”, then you’re looking at the natural results of kloak anonymizing your keyboard and mouse input. I.e., lag when opening menus, dragging things, etc. is expected. Tails won’t have that, but it also won’t anonymize your keyboard and mouse movements. Anonymizing those things requires lag, there simply isn’t a lag-free way to implement that with the way Linux desktops work today.

If you’re looking for a yes-or-no answer without context, then yes, the lag is (probably) normal.
