Slow shutdown of version 15 workstation and gateway

Opening up this issue from previous thread.

Since installing version 15 the shutdown for both is very slow (up to 2 minutes or more). It is like it is hanging waiting for certain jobs to complete but there is no indicator of what is happening since the screen is black but only the cursor flashing til they finally shutdown.

Which version specifically? 15 is too unspecific.

Which virtualizer?

You could enable Enable Persistent Systemd Journal Log

And then Check Systemd Journal Log of Previous Boot

Troubleshooting - Whonix

Version 15.0.0.7.1

And I am using kvm.

Whonix-Gateway VirtualBox 15.0.0.7.1 shutdown takes less than 3 seconds for me.

Can you reproduce this issue on Whonix-Gateway KVM 15.0.0.7.1? @HulaHoop

No. I know what he’s describing but it is not consistent and I couldn’t reproduce as of yet.

I guess that it is some process that is not shutting itself off gracefully and there has to be that 1min30 timeout for the system to do it because that can happen when I shutdown archlinux (though only occasionally if I left something running which would not shutdown gracefully). So I guess that happens here but on nearly every shutdown for some reason but can’t see it due to journalctl not being on by default.

I will put it on and see what it says and get back to you when I find out more.

I will say that about 1 in 10 times it shuts down in the 3 seconds that you guys say but it is very rare and no idea how to get it to do it as it doesn’t seem related to what programs I ran or how long the vm was up.

Just want to confirm what Pingaeir says. On my system shutdown of Whonix gateway and workstation does take about 2 minutes, every time. Same version 15.0.0.7.1 and kvm.

can you switch to text console and copy the messages as thy appear when shutdown stalls?

Ok, I did as HulaHoop asked. I cannot upload txt files, so I will paste the flurry of messages right here. But before I do so let me make an observation. I noticed that midway the shutdown process (of both Gateway and Workstation) the process halts, mentioning that a stop job is underway and a timer is set for 1 m 29 sec. When that period of time has passed the shutdown continues…

So maybe we already pinpointed the problem. But here is the shutdown process for the Gateway:

#[14;0]user@host:~$ sudo shutdown
[sudo] password for user:

This needs to be reported upstream against XFCE.

https://bugzilla.xfce.org/

They might ask for a backtrace.

contribute:bugs:start [Xfce Docs]

Debian specific instructions:
https://wiki.debian.org/HowToGetABacktrace

For simplify, you’d need this package too:
debug-misc opt-in package to easily enable debugging

Let me know if anyone wants to proceed debugging this.

@Patrick:
The segfault, right, should be reported, sure, when I get my Whonix system hardened I might do this (will let you know by that time). But the original aim of reporting the console messages was to tackle the slow shutdown. So was the “stop job” with the timer the culprit here?

Possibly.

Taking a long time on the screenshot. And just before that, the segfault.

I might be able to say more when systemd journal logs are provided as per Slow shutdown of version 15 workstation and gateway - #2 by Patrick

@Patrick
I got the journals, but I cannot post them here: “Body is limited to 50000 characters; you entered 453602.”

Use https://paste.debian.net or similar.

@rk1 Thank you for also speaking up about this issue and picking up where I left off :slight_smile: re giving the journal logs.

@Patrick
The files were too big for paste.debian also. So you can download them here:

with password: 6WkznRLkYhs3bXQ

Please don’t share otd (libre office or so) files. Plain text much better. However the workstation log was plain text and it gave another lead.

Last OK message:

Jan 24 11:12:08 host systemd[1]: Stopped Encrypted Swap File Creator.

Then takes a long time. Then:

Jan 24 11:13:38 host systemd[1]: session-1.scope: Stopping timed out. Killing.
Jan 24 11:13:38 host systemd[1]: session-1.scope: Killing process 1956 (lightdm) with signal SIGKILL.
Jan 24 11:13:38 host systemd[1]: session-1.scope: Failed with result ‘timeout’.
Jan 24 11:13:38 host systemd[1]: Stopped Session 1 of user user.

Would require debugging lightdm.

Added some instruction on how to get a lightdm debug log just now:

That log looks very similar to mine and I don’t see any errors there. Looks like proper termination.

I have no idea.

I suggest to report a bug against Debian.

And/or upstream original developers.

They might ask for a backtrace.

@Patrick
I want to report the bug like you suggested, but how to do so is not crystal clear. First problem I have is you say it is a lightdm bug. How do you know it is? Second when I go to launchpad -> robert-ancell, I see lightdm is one of his packages. But everywhere it says lightdm in Ubuntu. And the problem of slow shutdown arises in Whonix. Or you mean to say that lightdm as used in Whonix is the same lightdm used in Ubuntu?
