By chance, I was planing to improve the donation wiki page. I never communicated well how much and for what donations are required.
One dollar per month is worth more than 50 dollar as one time donation.
I am a modest person. Yet, for working full time on Whonix, I'd require at least require minimum subsistence level. Which is 1000 € (~1300 $) per month. Depending on your location, this might sound like a lot money. It's not. Germany is expensive. ~240 € per month for rent at the town's edge, ~350 € for compulsory health insurance, 30 € electricity, ~20 € internet flatrate, ~18 € compulsory public TV (gez, rundfunkbeitrag), food, clothes, transportation, whonix.org server cost... Isn't a lot money in comparison.
I am currently looking for a form/service to set up a monthly reoccurring payments.
I am everything but a paypal fan, they keep too much for themselves, and freeze accounts to their heart's content. Still, they offer simple reoccurring payment from countries. Since I cannot live outside the system, I am going to add such a button.
Looking at the sourceforge download statistics of Whonix News there are ~3800 users who use Whonix at least once per day (because whonixcheck usually runs at least once every day). If everyone paid a half dollar per month, that'd be enough money. Unrealistic to expect this. Still, I've never seen a "one dollar per month each" fundraising campaign. Eventually it works out.
There is nowadays more money in circulation than ever before. For a lot companies granting an unconditional basic income would be petty cash. As an alternative, finding a sponsor might work out as well. It has a bad taste to it, though. However, as long as it's transparent, it would still be a welcome alternative.
A dismissible whonix.org wiki site notice (similar to the one wikipedia is using sometimes when they do fundraising) may to better communicate the importance for donations.
All financial and other contributions are appropriated.
