From that point of view, the torsocks approach is better.

(That doesn’t invalidate above question of which is less likely to result in miscellaneous traffic not using the SocksPort (therefore using TransPort), torsocks or proxy settings.)

In doubt and since probably no further research can be expected on this topic anytime soon, I’d say keep the existing torsocks approach unless in a specific application case (Tor Browser) the proxy settings are actually better researched.
