I downloaded the two images from this site, which program/s do I need to use to open them? I saw a video where a guy opens them into explorer. Or do I need to copy them into a USB stick with unebootin or similar programs to boot whonix from there as it was a live operative system?
Is there any tutorial on this, please?

but it seems to be u r talking about Vbox.
first u should import them into the vbox, follow these photos:-
after that , first open whonix gateway and wait till it end the installation , then after that open whonix workstation and wait till the end of installation.
then
sudo apt-get update -y && sudo apt-get dist-upgradeinside gatetway first (wait till finish) then inside workstation
note:- not recommended to put -y with this command sudo apt-get dist-upgrade , please read:-
then open Tor browser inside whonix workstation and update to the latest stable version = surf anonymously 
note:- preferred to restart whonix GW&WS after running apt-get update&dist-upgrade
