Can Duckduckgo snoop ALL traffic?

This is a question in general:

If duckduckgo is the search engine in the browser by default, if one types in abc dot com , does it send to duckduckgo “abc” before you hit enter or go to the site?

In other words, does duckduckgo get to see all DNS queries just because they share the address bar with search?

And there’s no way to not have any search engine?
