Torbrowser not starting

I recently installed Whonix on windows and the browser is not starting. Hopefully someone can identify the problem.

user@host:~$ whonixcheck
[INFO] [whonixcheck] Connected to Tor.

When the Whonix team releases BUSTER updates,
they will be AUTOMATICALLY installed (when you run apt-get dist-upgrade)
along with updated packages from the Debian team.

cp: cannot stat ‘/home/user/.cache/tb/gpgtmpdir’: Permission denied
[ERROR] [torbrowser] /usr/bin/torbrowser script bug.

No panic. Nothing is broken. Just some rare condition has been hit.
Try again later. If this is a transient issue, it can be safely ignored.

There is likely a solution for this problem.

It may or may not be possible to fix but further information may be required.

Debugging information:

BASH_COMMAND: cp --verbose --recursive --no-clobber “/var/cache/tb-binary/.cache” “$tb_user_home/”

Instructions for reproduction of this issue?

Try this:

sudo chown --recursive user:user /home/user

Nope same error message:

user@host:~$ torbrowser
cp: cannot stat ‘/home/user/.cache/tb/temp’: Permission denied
cp: cannot stat ‘/home/user/.cache/tb/files’: Permission denied
cp: cannot stat ‘/home/user/.cache/tb/tbb_version_last_downloaded_save_file’: Permission denied

sudo ls -la /home/user/.cache/tb/
sudo rm -r /home/user/.cache/tb/
bash -x torbrowser

how do you insert terminal output stripped from links?

I don’t understand the question. What links and why they need to be
stripped?

If you want to redact things just copy it into a temporary text file and
remove whatever you think needs redaction.

I know there is a post opened here “Torbrowser not starting” but it is still unresolved in my case.
I have set up all good whonix gateway and whonix workstation.
When I run whonixcheck, I get the following:

“INFO: Whonix is produced independently of, with no guarantee from, The Tor Project. Whonix is a research project. hxxps://www.whonix.org
INFO: Whonix APT Repository: Enabled. When the Whonix team releases BUSTER updates, they will be AUTOMATICALLY installed (when you run apt-get dist-upgrade) along with updated packages from the Debian team. Please read hxxps://www.whonix .org/wiki/Trust to understand the risk. If you want to change this, use:
Start Menu → System → Whonix Repository
INFO: Debian Package Update Check Result: No updates found via apt-get.
INFO: Please donate! See: hxxps://www.whonix .org/wiki/Donate”

And so the connection is set up correctly. Now when I start tor browser, I used to get the same lines as in the post I attached.
And so I followed the steps, and execute the commands:

sudo chown --recursive user:user /home/user
sudo ls -la /home/user/.cache/tb/
sudo rm -r /home/user/.cache/tb/
bash -x torbrowser

But I got the following error. Well, at the time I was writing this I decided to post from the start of the terminal. At the end of the terminal you can see the error correspondence to the command “bash -x torbrowser”. At first I also tried to remove tor browser and reinstall by my self.

EDIT: I end up posting the problem here (https://hastebin.com/usikixigav.xml) because it says I can’t post links. Basically I got another error and I can’t open torbrowser

HELP is very apreciated

You can post links now.

That hastebin link doesn’t work. Please proceed posting the log here encapsulated on code tags.

```
text paste here
```

OMG, link is broken. I used hastebin because I was on tor an pastebin was requesting CAPTCHA like 4 times in a row, I was tired.
I am going to upload images so we know exactly how it looks like.
First, we check all works right, and whonix-gateway and whonix-workstation give a good result when executing whonixcheck z-1.png and z-2.png (https://ibb.co/mNHdqvR and https://ibb.co/GPP1VHg).
Then what I wanted to do is run the browser, by going to the menu and click tor browser, and I get the following z-3.png https://ibb.co/3yk38gL

So to solve this error, I though in installing firefox, and then installing a new tor browser, but I could not install firefox, but I could install chromium. Here is exactly all the two commands.

So then I went to the post I execute those commands, but now I do not find all the code I ran, so I executed another time:

And at the end, gui interface showed up and got the follwing image z-5.png https://ibb.co/9n2k744
I also tried to remove torbrowser using the tot browser downloader, but nothing happens, and if I execute the command in the terminal, I get more errors

EDIT: the other time I execute “update-torbrowser” before executing this commands:

sudo chown --recursive user:user /home/user
sudo ls -la /home/user/.cache/tb/
sudo rm -r /home/user/.cache/tb/
bash -x torbrowser

But after this commands I do not get any error:

It says it is not a valid answer because I wrote y (yes), instead of selecting a version. Now, I am a little confused because the last version of torbrowser is 9.5 and not 10.0a1.

What should I do to solve my browser problem (tor browser and others).

And with such a long post, I would like to know how can I assign the super key to launch the menu, instead of clicking in the left corner z-6.png (https://ibb.co/SPGZrtF), what should I put here?

Thank for your attention

Generally, see Do not start GUI Applications with Root Rights - because that creates file permission issues. Also don’t use sudo to manipulate files in /home/user folder - same reason.

Command

sudo chown --recursive user:user /home/user

fixes permissions issues in user home folder.

firefox-esr

(Debian decision to call it that way.)

but not advised as per Tor Browser Essentials

KVM? See this Whonix / Kicksecure KVM 15.0.1.3.4 Released

a means alpha as in “testing”.

That text is already saying “In most cases you are best off choosing the lowest version number among them.”

I don’t know. It’s a Debian / XFCE question. Best resolved as per Self Support First Policy for Whonix

Referring to the ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED, I do not understand why chromium does not load any tab, I can’t connect to any page. Why can’t I run any browser? Because it seems I have all connection good with whonixcheck.

I have read the correlation and all this stuff. It could be very useful to have a different identity in different workspaces. And the kicksecure vm it seems is to run non-tor connections. But I prefer whonix because it is secure + run tor connection, and the kicksecure vm only is secure.

About torbrowser, I still get the same error, and I do not know what to do:

/usr/bin/torbrowser script bug.

No panic. Nothing is broken. Just some rare condition has been hit.
Try again later. If this is a transient issue, it can be safely ignored.

There is likely a solution for this problem.

* Whonix User Help Forum. https://forums.whonix.org
* And Whonix Documentation. https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Tor_Browser

It may or may not be possible to fix but further information may be required.

* Try start from command line. https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Tor_Browser#From_the_Command_Line
* Try start from command line with debugging enabled. https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Tor_Browser#In_Debugging_Mode
* If you don't mind to repair that Tor Browser install, reinstall of Tor Browser would also likely solve this. https://www.whonix.org/wiki/Tor_Browser#reinstall

Debugging information:

BASH_COMMAND: cp --verbose --recursive --no-clobber "/var/cache/tb-binary/$tb_install_folder_dot/$tb_browser_name" "$tb_browser_folder"
exit_code: 1

tb_browser_folder: /home/user/.tb/tor-browser

tb_user_js_target_file: /home/user/.tb/tor-browser/Browser/TorBrowser/Data/Browser/profile.default/user.js

output: /usr/lib/msgcollector/msgcollector
output_opts: --icon /usr/share/icons/anon-icon-pack/tbupdate.ico --parentpid 1846 --identifier torbrowser --parenttty /dev/pts/0 --whoami user
progressbaridx:

Experts only:
bash -x torbrowser

I execute another time the command you have told me before running tor browser, but no luck.

sudo chown --recursive user:user /home/user

How can I do to run torbrowser without errors? I am a little panic

There’s no need to panic. This works well for most users for a very long time.

Possibly you’re doing something which you shouldn’t be doing. If something doesn’t work, then often using sudo / root isn’t an option either. It often won’t - unless indicated - solve the issue but cause permission issues.

Could you please run the following command and post the output here? Probably won’t work but good for debugging.

cp --verbose --recursive --no-clobber "/var/cache/tb-binary/.tb/tor-browser" "/home/user/.tb/tor-browser"

Next, delete /var/cache/tb-binary folder. There shouldn’t be anything there unless you know you modified that folder.

sudo rm -r /var/cache/tb-binary

Also delete this /home/user/.tb folder.

sudo rm -r /home/user/.tb

And delete /home/user/.cache/tb folder.

sudo rm -r /home/user/.cache/tb

Then this should be fixed. Does it work now?

Does it break after the while? If yes, what kind of modifications are you making to Tor Browser / running sudo / root inside browser folder?

You are my man. You solved the problem! This command

cp --verbose --recursive --no-clobber "/var/cache/tb-binary/.tb/tor-browser" "/home/user/.tb/tor-browser"

I had to executed with root privileges because without it, it said I haven’t permissions. Then I did this:

sudo rm -r /var/cache/tb-binary
sudo rm -r /home/user/.tb
sudo rm -r /home/user/.cache/tb

But after I did that, linux just freezed, I did not know why (I do not think it was because the commands I ran, but because some strange error I get since of resizing my swap partition and root partition to give more GB, I think the error is in the swap partition because I runned in recovery mode and said timed out).
But after those commands I took a photo with a external device, and pop up a window saying

chromium is given the same error, but I do not care, I will uninstall chromium and install kicksecure vm, and run a net vm (with free vpn) and connect to that to others vm for non-tor connections.
